What is Lipreading?

Lipreading is a vital communication skill for many people with a hearing loss. It's the ability to recognise the lip shapes, gestures and facial movements of a person when they are speaking, in order to gain a better understanding of what they are saying.

Why Learn to Lipread?

Learning to lipread can improve your communication skills. It is a tool to help you make sense of what you are hearing. Or if you have no hearing it helps you to understand and follow what another person says.  Although not all sounds in the English language are noticeable by sight, lipreading gives clues and along with your knowledge and general awareness, it is a way to enable you to take part in a conversation and function more effectively in a hearing world.
